2000 Nissan Altima
Two years after a major redesign in 1998, Nissan introduces the 2000 Nissan Altima
with many improved features. It has almost the same look, except that it looks
sleeker and larger, but drives better. Major improvements were made on the engine,
the transmission, safety features and noise control. Improvements were also made
on the interior and exterior designs.
The 2000 model still have the same 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine but it has improved
from 150 to 150 hp horse power. This won't give you the speed of V6 engines but
it gives you a greater power. Anyway, the Altima is designed this way to provide
a smoother rather than a faster drive.
To provide faster acceleration in its 5-speed manual transmission, its engineers
have redesigned the gearing and modified its gear ratios. The 4-speed automatic
transmission for the GLE was also improved. The automatic transmission was reprogrammed
to provide faster acceleration especially in mountainous terrains.
Another improvement was made to the suspension to improve ride handling. For
the XE model, anti-roll bars were added. The GXE now has its own separate shock
absorber tuning. The SE, designed as sports model, has the stiffest springs, stiffest
shocks and thickest anti-roll bars. Both the SE and GLE have the blow-off shock
technology to absorb big bumps.
Improvements were also made on its interior and exterior designs. New grilles,
headlights and taillights were made available for the new model. It is also longer
by more than two inches from the previous model. The interiors also became more
spacious because of wider legroom and headroom. The 2000 model was also an attempt
to lessen noise by preventing it from entering the cabin, e.g. thicker door glass
and more sound insulation.
